Component 1: Evaluation -
In the 'Abstraction' personal project I researched two artists. One artist that I researched was James Welling. I discovered his work through Instagram as the bold, highly saturated colours of his work caught my eye. Through researching his work I learned about his processes and how what steps he would take to achieve his outcomes. Through the research, I incorporated certain aspects of his work, such as his use of colour and light. You can see these formal elements incorporated into my work. For example, the way he would use refracting light and thing like that to make the work abstract. Another artist that I researched was Aaron Siskind. Through researching his work I experimented with taking images of different surfaces. In Siskind's work, he looks at nature and buildings and specifically the surfaces and textures. Such as the textures on the tree bark and close ups of posters. Through research, I tried by taking images of textures up close to the surface. You can see my responses to this, in some of my photoshop experiments. I experimented a lot in Abstraction as I used multiples mediums to try create an abstract image. One way that I experimented is through Photoshop. On Photoshop, I experimented with layering and adjusting the levels of saturation to disguise what is actually in frame. With layering, I layered different perspectives of the surface on top of each other and used different masks to create the effects of acetate on Photoshop. Another way I experimented is with Photograms. In this I placed different objects and limbs and things to create an abstract photogram that means that the things aren't easy to distinguish. For example, I would use hands and staples and sheets of net to create an odd composition. In 'Abstraction', I created two photo books and a mount. In my photo books I presented my work in chapters, organised by my different experiments. For example, I would begin with inverted images and then progress to my layered Photoshop experiments. In my abstract mounts, I placed my photograms and images on to the mount, with both black and white images and coloured images.
