This image is called Ice Cream due to composition of the cloud above the sign. The sign being the cone and the cloud being the ice cream.
How would you describe this photograph to a person who can't see it?
I would describe this image by pointing out shapes, space and the composition. I would say that there is a slim rectangle slanted at a 10 degrees to the left in the centre of the page which reaches 2/3 up the page, with a white triangle hugging the slim rectangle and then there is a fluffy cloud on the top of triangle. There are lines 10 degrees to the right drawing the pavement, and a caravan with a boxy shape. And there is a lot of negative space on the left side.
How is space represented in this photograph?
There is a lot of negative space in this photo. In the foreground there is a triangle which seems to be the central focus with a caravan to the left of the image being in the middle-ground and a tree. then a house shadowed by a tree in the background, and even further back is the rest of the street and power lines, very common in a suburban neighbourhood.
What is in or out of focus?
In this photo everything seems to be in focus however the white object stick out like a sore thumb. The triangle in the fore-ground seems to be the central focus, with the car and caravan sticking out but trying to be hidden slightly, however the dark objects aren't really the focus but are noticeable due to the dark colour.
Which part of the photography strikes out as most interesting?
I think the caravan and the house strike out as the most interesting things in this image as they stick out yet they are slightly hidden as they are in the mid-ground of the image and are over shadowed by the dark objects.
What questions would you ask the artist?
I would ask 'What does this area mean to you?' I would ask this to find out where this was taken and the backstory to this. 'Why do some thing to stand out?' I would ask this to find out why some thing pop out and if they mean anything to him personally. 'Why is the street sign the focus' as it would explain the focus.
What do you think it would be like to live here?
I think that this a very suburban american lifestyle, a very relaxed life. Like a stereotypical 80's film, for example the infamous 'Ferris Bueller's Day Off' set in suburban east coast America, A lifestyle very different to a NYC lifestyle.
Why do you suppose this artist made this photograph?
I think he made this photograph due to the simple shapes and the huge amount of contrast found in this one single piece, with the bright white caravan and the car all making for a huge contrast with the black trees.
What do you think is effective about this photograph?
I think that the contrast of the white, grey and black tree create a nice image bringing out certain things, however I don't like the street sign being all up in your face.
